NIHI seeks to serve as a co-ordinator and facilitator in the development of initiatives dedicated to HI research and education.

NIHI operates under the Community of Practice concept. It was established as a federal not-for-profit corporation in Canada. in 2008. NIHI was launched with the participation of researchers and teachers from most Canadian universities and colleges with existing or incipient HI education or research programs.
